COCAINE

History of Cocaine Use

Cocaine is the refined product of coca leaves.  Coca, a plant indigenous to the Andes in South America, has been used for at least 4,000 years by the indigenous cultures of the region.  The uses have ranged from cultural to medicinal. The leaves were and are chewed on and poultices are also used.

The first use of coca in its refined form, cocaine, was in the late 19th century.  It made an excellent local anesthesia and was used as early as 1880 for surgeries of the eyes, ears and nose and throat. In addition to its anesthetic properties it also constricts blood vessels thereby reducing the amount of blood flow during surgery.

Within 30 years of the first purified cocaine being used medically, it had become a drug of addiction and was a serious enough problem that it called for legal action. That action came from Congress in in December 1914 with the passage of the Harrison Act which made it illegal to use recreationally. There was a precipitous fall off of non-medical use of cocaine after the Harrison act with other stimulants that were cheaper and legal taking its place.

In the 1960's there was a resurgence of the use of cocaine which caused Congress to make it a Schedule II drug in 1970. This classification recognizes it as a drug that has medical uses, but is highly addictive and may lead to dependence.
One company, Stepan Co, has been approved by the DEA to manufacture cocaine.

After peaking in the mid 1980s cocaine use began to decline.  Like the period after the Harrison act this may have been in part due to other cheaper more easily available stimulants taking its place. Cocaine, however, remains a problem in the US. In 2004 the  National Survey on Drug Use and Health, found that over  34 million Americans who were twelve and older had used cocaine at least one time in their life. This is 14.2% of the population over the age of twelve. Over five million people in the US, or (2.4%) used cocaine sometime in the past year.
